Friday

Jambo jet flies from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Goma international airport where it lands at 12:40. From the airport, you will be picked by your driver to the next destination. You will be driven to Tchegera island which is located on the beautiful southern shores of Lake Kivu. On this island is Tchegerea island retreat where you will spend the rest of the day relaxing, having stunning views of Lake Kivu and at the night you will have the red-lit sky which is a result of lava flow from Mount Nyamuragira and Mount Nyiragongo.

Some of the activities you can engage in while at Tchegera island include kayaking and paddle boarding which give you an opportunity to explore lake Kivu. Bird lovers can have birding activities where they will spot a number of birds such as lesser-stripped swallow, bronze sunbird, white-browed robin-chat, black crake, African fish eagle, red-billed firefinch, crimson-rumped waxbill, red bishop, and bronzed manakin among others.

Saturday

On a Saturday, you will wake up to a relaxed morning breakfast and check out of your lodge at Tchegera island. You will be transported to your lodge in Virunga national park but before getting to the lodge, you will pass by the headquarters and pick the gorilla trekking permits. Kibumba Tented Lodge is the lodge to use and on arrival at this place, you will check in your rooms, have a day relaxing as you prepare for the gorilla trekking the next day.

Sunday

On Sunday morning, trekkers will have to wake up early in the morning and have breakfast at the lodge. The driver will transfer them to the briefing point where they will meet other trekkers for a briefing. During the briefing, the trekkers will learn from the wardens about the rules and regulations of the gorilla trekking activity and armed ranger guides will lead them into the jungle.

The gorilla trekking activities take 2-5 hours of going through different trekking trails searching for the endangered apes. During the search, the trekkers are able to meet different park animals such as chimpanzees, aardvark, olive baboons, monkeys, elephants, topis, buffaloes, giant forest hogs, kobs, bongo, mongoose, birds, and different vegetation types.

When the trekkers meet the mountain gorillas, they are given 1 hour to be around them learning about their habits, taking photos, and watching them do daily activities such as hunting, nesting, coupling, and breastfeeding among others. After gorilla trekking, you will be transferred back to the lodge where you will have lunch and have the rest of the evening relaxing.

Monday

On a Monday morning, you will wake up to morning breakfast, and later you will check out of the lodge. You will be driven to Goma international airport for your flight back to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi using the Jambo jet.
