Tchegera Island camp
Tchegera Island Camp is located off the northern shore of Lake Kivu in Virunga National Park, just 30 minutes boat ride from Goma and offers standard safari accommodation to tourists on an isolated and horseshoe-shaped island.
The camp is an ideal accommodation for tourists to stay after an adventurous mount Nyiragongo hiking and Goma city tour. Each tent opens up to Lake Kivu and the four volcanoes of Virunga region. The main building is a simple mess tent and includes a lounge, dining and bar.
Tchegera Island Camp has a total of eight simple but comfortable safari-style tented rooms and can be set as single, double and twins; sitting on black sandy shore of the island. All tents have flushing toilets, bucket showers, sockets and lights powered by a generator. More so, tents have verandas to enable guest sit outside and relax while enjoying the sunset over the lake.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner is served communally in the main mess tent. Usually after dinner, hurricane lamps and a campfire are set up at the beach. Be keen to watch mountain Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira volcanoes turn the night sky red.
The rate for a single room at this camp is $168 and $226 for a double and twin tent. These rates are subject to change without prior notice.
Guests staying at Tchegera Island Camp enjoy a number of activities such as bird watching and kayaking to explore different islands. Common birds here include; African eagles, cormorants, herons and gulls. You may as well, enjoy the beach with an ice-cold drink, relax and sunbath in the morning and evening hours.
Looking at the conservation impact of Tchegera Island Camp, Virunga National Park has been harshly threatened by political instabilities in the past years, however, with financial support from the camp through employing the local community, hosting a number of tourists to boost the industry and the commitment of park rangers, this has consequently led to protection of the biodiversity of the park.
Getting To Tchegera Island Camp & Expected Experience
From Goma town, drive to Kituku port to board a boat to the Island. Enjoy the great sceneries during your journey and arrival at Tchegera Island. Upon your arrival to Tchegera Island camp using a boat, you will be warmly welcomed by their professional and friendly staff with a glass of fresh juice that makes you relax after any park activities like gorilla trekking and Nyiragngo volcano hiking.
Check in to your booked tent and you may take a quick shower to freshen up and relax at the shoreline. You may as well order for you lunch or read your novel at the terrace. Some opt to listen to the magical sounds of the wilderness at their veranda or play their favorite music while watching the beautiful sunset. You may also decide to remain active in your evening by taking a guided bush walk, bird watching, jogging or Kayaking on the close waters. All these activities can be organized while at the camp. Tchegera Island camp is not always that congested; therefore, you can enjoy a quite refreshing environment.
The boat sets off from Tchegera Island to Goma at approximately 7:30am. For those with transfers to Kigali for their outbound flights, this is the best schedule from the island to the main land.
