Virunga National Park
Virunga national park offers gorilla trekking tours and safaris in DR Congo. Yes, mountain gorillas and mount Nyiragongo are the biggest attractions if you are planning to visit this park.
Tracking mountain gorillas in Virunga Congo remains one of the most moving, life changing experiences on our portfolio. You will leave early in the morning, when it is still cool, from the Mikeno Lodge or Kibumba tented camp towards the mountain gorillas. We highly recommend to visit the mountain gorillas at least twice because during your first visit you will probably experience the entire visit through your camera. From our past guest experience, majority say that they were much more relaxed during their second visit and were able to enjoy the whole experience even more. What makes a second visit even more worthwhile is that visitors meet a different gorilla family that behaves completely different.
Depending on the location of the different families, you’ll have to walk for about one hour. You will spend one hour with the gorilla family during your Virunga safaris with a help of very professional ranger guards.
Besides gorillas, the park is endowed with mountain volcanoes such as Mount Nyiragongo, Mount Mikeno and Mount Nyamuragira where tourists go for several activities such as hiking, nature walks among others. Mountain Nyiragongo is a stunning and interesting active volcano. The last eruption happened on May 27, 2021 after 19 years which turned the sky red with lava oozing out from the ground spreading widely to Goma city
Virunga national park was the first national park to be gazzetted in Africa and it was formerly known as Albert national park but later changed to Virunga national park. Yes, the park covers an area of 7,800 sq km and stretches up to River Ishasha and some parts of Lake Edward; neighboring Queen Elizabeth National park and Mount Rwenzori national park in Uganda.
